Sewer Utility Tax Update

Lake Stevens, WALocal News

The Lake Stevens City Council has taken a significant step in enhancing local infrastructure by approving a sewer utility tax during its December 10, 2024, meeting. Effective March 1, 2025, the tax will initially be set at 3%, rising to 6% in 2026. This ordinance, known as Ordinance 1193, comes as a response to the city's previous lack of a sewer utility tax, making Lake Stevens one of the few cities in Snohomish County without such a measure. The funds generated from this tax will be allocated to critical projects, including street and sewer infrastructure maintenance, road repairs, and extending sewer services to areas currently unserved. While the tax is imposed directly on utility companies, there is a possibility that these companies may pass on the costs to their customers.

The city emphasizes that this move is essential for maintaining safety and promoting responsible growth within Lake Stevens. By implementing this tax, the city aims to address pressing infrastructure needs and ensure a sustainable future. Overall, this initiative reflects the city's commitment to improving the quality of life for its residents.
