Kirkland City Council Declares April 2025 as Language Access Month

The Kirkland City Council has unanimously proclaimed April 2025 as Language Access Month to improve language equity for residents with limited English proficiency. During the meeting, Mayor Kelli Curtis highlighted the critical role of language access in fostering civic participation and access to essential services. The proclamation acknowledges the linguistic diversity in Kirkland, where over 13,000 residents communicate in languages such as Spanish, Chinese, and Arabic. Nura Adam, owner of Adams Interpreting Services, received the proclamation on behalf of the interpreting community and expressed her appreciation for the city's commitment to inclusivity. She emphasized the importance of interpreters as cultural ambassadors in bridging communication gaps.

The council's decision aligns with prior resolutions that support linguistic inclusivity. Looking ahead, city officials plan to enhance language access services and promote awareness of resources available to non-English speakers.
