Kenmore City Council Expands Photo Enforcement Program for Enhanced School Zone Safety

Kenmore, WALocal News

In a recent City Council meeting, Kenmore officials decided to expand the Automated Photo Enforcement (KAPE) program, a move aimed at enhancing safety in school zones. Since its launch in spring 2023, the KAPE program has successfully reduced the percentage of speeding drivers from over 95% to just 1. 5% in designated school zones. The average speed in these areas has fallen from more than 30 mph to 20 mph, significantly mitigating the risk of fatal accidents involving schoolchildren. The Council's new directive will allow photo enforcement to be active year-round, providing continued protection for pedestrians and cyclists beyond just school hours.

Furthermore, the program will extend to the Inglemoor High school zone on Simonds Rd to enforce both the school zone and regulatory speed limits. Earlier red-light enforcement at a busy intersection has also shown promising results, with violations dropping to less than one per week. This proactive approach underscores Kenmore's dedication to community safety and the well-being of its residents. As the program continues to demonstrate success, further expansions may be considered in the future.
