On July 12, 2019, the Machinami Foundation from Japan visited Issaquah Highlands to explore innovative community designs and sustainable living practices. Their visit was coordinated by the Highlands Council, which organized presentations from local organizations and a tour of zHome, renowned as the first multi-family zero-net energy neighborhood in the United States. The guests appreciated how affordable housing was thoughtfully integrated with higher-end market-rate homes, showcasing a diverse community structure. They were also impressed by Issaquah's commitment to preserving 1,500 acres of open space and parks, enhancing the quality of life for residents. Akio Yumoto, the Travel Coordinator for the Machinami Foundation, expressed that the tour was instrumental for their research mission, aimed at learning from successful community designs.

This initiative reflects a growing global interest in sustainable urban planning and housing management. The visit underscores the importance of international collaboration in addressing housing and environmental challenges.
