Many receiving smishing scam messages for alleged unpaid tolls
The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) has raised alarms about a significant increase in “smishing” scams targeting individuals with fake messages about unpaid tolls. These scams have been ongoing since April, but the number of fraudulent texts has doubled in recent months, according to WSDOT spokesperson Lauren McLaughlin. Scammers are employing the Good To Go! branding and logos to lend credibility to their messages, often creating a sense of urgency about potential legal actions. Victims are led to believe that they must act quickly to avoid penalties, prompting them to click on malicious links.
Once there, they may be asked for sensitive financial details, such as credit card numbers or bank information. WSDOT clarifies that it does not send texts regarding unpaid tolls and advises individuals to check their accounts directly through the official website. Those who have already provided personal information are urged to contact their banks and credit card companies immediately. The FBI and Federal Trade Commission are investigating the broader implications of these scams, which are affecting individuals across multiple states.
