Gig Harbor police chief Busey announces retirement
Gig Harbor Police Chief Kelly Busey, who has served with the department for over three decades, will retire on June 23. Starting his career as an entry-level officer in 1991, Busey became chief in 2014 and has since made significant improvements to the department. Before his retirement, he prioritized hiring a second lieutenant and achieving state accreditation, highlighting his commitment to operational efficiency. Busey's approach to policing focused on community engagement, advocating for education and cooperation over enforcement. His leadership has garnered commendations from city officials, including Mayor Mary Barber, who praised his dedication to public safety and building community trust.
The department, under Busey’s guidance, expanded to 23 commissioned officers and three administrative staff, with plans to hire three more. He expressed gratitude for the support from his wife and mentors throughout his career. A retirement reception will honor his contributions to the city, marking the end of an impactful tenure.
