The Gig Harbor and Peninsula high school debate teams have both qualified for the national tournament following impressive performances at the Western Washington National Speech and Debate Association District tournament held on March 7 and 8. Gig Harbor finished in second place, closely trailing Bellevue High School, while Peninsula achieved third place with only three competitors. A total of 11 students from both teams will compete at the national tournament in Des Moines, Iowa, scheduled for June 15 to 20. This qualification is particularly significant for Peninsula, marking their first appearance at nationals since 2017. The teams plan to pool their resources and travel together to the tournament, fostering a collaborative spirit.

Coach Chris Coovert highlighted the friendship and teamwork among the students, noting their tendency to coach each other and work together on research. The two teams will first compete at the state tournament from March 20 to 22. The students who qualified represent a diverse range of debate events, showcasing their talents and dedication to the craft.
