Gig Harbor, WALocal News

Judith and Daniel Caldwell, acclaimed metal artists, are preparing to unveil a captivating compass rose artwork at the roundabout of Harborview Drive and Stinson Avenue in Gig Harbor. Their innovative design, which integrates sculptural elements into the pavement, aims to engage children and instill a sense of ownership and fascination. Selected by the city Arts Commission, the project includes representations of native flora and fauna, reflecting the region's rich biodiversity. Estimated at $21,616. 65, this initiative is funded by the City’s Public Art Fund, established in 2004 from unspent arts budgets.

The Caldwells’ design draws inspiration from vintage nautical charts, featuring intricate details and images of historic sailing vessels. Arts Commission Chair Sonja Johnson praised their detailed research and artistic vision during a recent presentation. The installation will not only beautify the area but also serve as an educational tool about local history and ecology. By embedding art in everyday spaces, the Caldwells hope to create unexpected joy and discovery for community members.
