The Gig Harbor boys basketball team fell just one point short of upsetting top-seeded Auburn Mountainview, losing 67-66 in a dramatic Class 3A District III tournament semifinal. The Tides, who had previously pulled off significant upsets, seemed poised to advance after leading by ten points with five minutes remaining. However, Auburn's MVP Sebastian Arius led a late-game comeback, scoring crucial points that shifted the momentum. Coach Billy Landram’s strategic adjustments, including a newly implemented switching zone defense, showcased the Tides' adaptability and strength throughout the tournament. Players like Michael Masini and Cole Browne played pivotal roles, with Masini contributing 18 points and an impressive 20 rebounds.

Despite the loss, the players maintained a positive outlook, with Masini stating, “This one is tough, but that’s basketball. ” Browne, who previously participated in a close district championship loss, expressed determination to prepare for future state competitions. As the Tides reflect on their performance, they remain hopeful and ready to tackle upcoming challenges.
