Short-term Rental Program

Gig Harbor, WALocal News

In response to the rise of short-term rentals (STRs), the City of Gig Harbor has enacted Ordinance 1507, which was adopted by the City Council on February 27, 2023. This ordinance defines STRs and introduces a Type II permit process applicable in all residential and commercial zones that permit dwelling units. By allowing only one STR permit per operator, the city aims to maintain neighborhood character and establish performance standards for STRs. The ordinance also facilitates the lifting of the existing moratorium on rental applications, paving the way for a more structured rental framework. To monitor the situation effectively, the city will develop an online STR tracking tool and issue quarterly reports that will help assess any adverse impacts and public complaints.

This proactive approach is part of a broader strategy that includes a public outreach process for the upcoming 2024 Comprehensive Plan update. The city acknowledges the importance of community involvement in shaping these regulations and encourages residents to voice their opinions. Through these measures, Gig Harbor demonstrates its commitment to responsible growth while addressing the complexities of short-term rental management.
