Federal Way City Council Approves Youth Mental Health Facility Amid Community Concerns
The Federal Way City Council convened to discuss a proposed youth mental health treatment facility that would include 94 beds and is set to be located near the Federal Way Community Center. While council members recognized the pressing need for such a facility to address the mental health crisis among youth, concerns about security and the facility's potential impact on local law enforcement were highlighted. Council President Linda Kochmar noted that the facility could attract individuals from across the region and state, increasing the demand for services. The facility is intended to create over 100 high-paying jobs and provide critical mental health support, with Council Member Honda stressing the urgent need for such services. Despite the overall support for the proposal, concerns were raised about its proximity to vulnerable populations at the Community Center, leading to questions about security measures.
After thorough discussion, the council ultimately passed the proposal with a narrow 4-3 vote. The council will continue to engage with operational details and funding processes to ensure the facility can effectively serve the community while addressing safety concerns.
