City approves acquisition of lagoon property on Steel Lake
The Federal Way City Council has taken a significant step towards environmental conservation by approving the acquisition of a five and a half acre property on Steel Lake, affectionately known as "the lagoon. " This initiative aims to protect the area for conservation and future park use, with public works director EJ Walsh highlighting the appraisal process that supported the purchase's public interest. Long-time Steel Lake resident Margaret Reyhner, who has passionately advocated for the lake's protection for over 50 years, expressed her enthusiasm for the council's decision. She described the property as a serene habitat for various birds and waterfowl, emphasizing its ecological value amidst urban development pressures. Reyhner's advocacy dates back to the 1970s, when she began addressing environmental concerns at state levels, showcasing her commitment to the lake's health.
Melissa Hamilton, a fellow community member, echoed Reyhner's sentiments, recognizing the community's collective effort to safeguard their natural spaces. The acquisition not only represents a victory for environmental stewardship but also enhances recreational opportunities for families, as Steel Lake Park is a cherished local destination. This decision underscores the city council's commitment to preserving vital green spaces for the enjoyment of current and future generations.
