Local refugees rally for more support in Olympia
The New Americans Legislative Education and Advocacy Day held on February 27 in Olympia brought together around 300 refugees advocating for essential resources, including English language classes and housing support. Organized by the New Americans Alliance for Policy and Research, the event showcased the voices of individuals from over 20 countries, emphasizing their integration into communities like Kent and Federal Way. Executive Director Someireh Amirfaiz articulated the collective desire for recognition and support, stating that refugees seek a "hand up" rather than handouts. Local legislators, including Rep. Sharon Tomiko Santos, highlighted achievements in refugee support, such as expanding dual language education and improving healthcare access.
Attendees shared personal experiences, including long waitlists for English classes, which reflect the high demand for these essential services. The rally also called for the establishment of a Washington Office of Language Access to enhance program management without incurring additional costs. As the community continues to grow, the need for affordable housing and culturally responsive services remains critical. The event served as a reminder of the important contributions refugees make to the nation's diversity and economy.
