Vandalism at Islamic Center causes concern about potential hate crime
A recent vandalism incident at the Islamic Center of Federal Way, where a man threw objects through windows, has sparked concerns about a possible hate crime targeting the Muslim community. The incident occurred just after midnight on December 28, 2024, and was captured on security video showing the suspect fleeing in a pickup truck. Imraan, the executive director of the Washington state chapter of CAIR, emphasized the disturbing nature of the attack and called for a thorough investigation to determine any bias motive. Kent Police Chief Rafael Padilla stated that they are working to identify the suspect but noted that the video quality makes it difficult to ascertain the suspect's race. The Islamic Center has previously been a victim of crime, with a burglary occurring in the summer of 2023, drawing attention to ongoing issues of vandalism and hate crimes against places of worship in the area.
Council President Satwinder Kaur expressed her sadness over the vandalism and emphasized the need for unity and respect within the community. This incident reflects a broader trend of increasing anti-Muslim sentiment, as highlighted by CAIR's recent civil rights report documenting a surge in bias complaints. The Kent Police are committed to investigating the incident thoroughly and will pursue hate crime charges if evidence emerges.
