Vance Boelter, a 57-year-old Minnesota man, is suspected of shooting Democratic lawmakers Melissa Hortman and John Hoffman in a politically motivated attack that left Hortman and her husband dead. The shootings occurred early Saturday morning, prompting police to respond to reports of gunfire at their homes. Governor Tim Walz labeled the incident a “politically motivated assassination,” emphasizing the need for non-violent political discourse. Authorities located a list of potential political targets in Boelter's vehicle, leading to increased security for state officials amid ongoing political demonstrations. Both lawmakers were members of the Minnesota Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party, underscoring the political nature of the violence.

The condition of the injured lawmakers, John and Yvette Hoffman, remains undisclosed as they recover in the hospital. The investigation is ongoing, with law enforcement seeking additional suspects and persons of interest. President Trump has been briefed on the situation, with federal assistance in the investigation.
