San Diego lawmakers demand answers regarding ICE raid at Buona Forchetta

El Cajon, CALocal News

Local lawmakers from San Diego wrote to DHS Secretary Kristi Noem, demanding answers about an ICE raid at Buona Forchetta restaurant that resulted in the detention of several undocumented workers. The lawmakers criticized the aggressive tactics employed by ICE, including armed agents in military gear and the use of flash-bang grenades, arguing that such actions instilled fear rather than ensuring safety. They highlighted that the detained workers, who included nationals from Mexico and Colombia, were not considered public safety threats, contradicting the rationale provided by ICE. The lawmakers emphasized the crucial contributions of immigrants to the local economy, citing that those in the San Diego metro area contribute $11. 3 billion in taxes annually.

Following the raid, Buona Forchetta reopened, expressing gratitude for community support amid a GoFundMe campaign that raised more than $126,000 for the detained employees. Federal search warrants indicated that a five-year-old tip led to the raid, alleging a significant number of undocumented workers at the restaurant. The incident has raised questions about the tactics of the Department of Homeland Security and their impact on public trust. Local politicians condemned the raid, stating it left the community shaken and fearful.
