Suspect in custody after deadly off-campus shooting near El Cajon Valley High School
Terrell Gibbs, 47, has been arrested on homicide charges after a shooting near El Cajon Valley High School that resulted in the death of 26-year-old Jaquis Holiday. The incident, which took place in the 300 block of First Street, prompted a precautionary lockdown of the school, although officials later clarified there was no direct threat to students. According to the El Cajon Police Department, Gibbs turned himself in to detectives six hours after the shooting occurred. Investigators believe Gibbs and Holiday were acquaintances, suggesting the shooting was an isolated incident. Anxiety among parents grew as they awaited news outside the school, which was also addressing an unrelated medical emergency at the time.
The lockdown was lifted by 2 p. m. when law enforcement confirmed the situation was under control. ECPD stated that two nearby elementary schools also followed secure campus protocols as a precaution. The community expressed shock over the incident, highlighting the area's reputation for safety.
