Drunk driving suspected in wrong-way crash that killed woman on I-8 in College Area
A deadly wrong-way crash on Eastbound Interstate 8 near San Diego State University claimed the life of a woman driving a Mini Cooper early Thursday morning. The incident was reported at around 4:30 a. m. when a BMW, traveling in the wrong direction, collided head-on with the Mini Cooper. The force of the impact sent the Mini Cooper down an embankment, while the BMW remained on the freeway, blocking multiple lanes.
Tragically, the woman was killed, and the BMW driver was taken to the hospital with injuries before being arrested on suspicion of DUI. California Highway Patrol Sgt. Josh Nelson voiced his frustration, stating, "It's difficult to continue showing up to these crashes when they are completely avoidable. " All eastbound lanes of I-8 were closed for at least two hours during the response and cleanup. An update from Caltrans confirmed that traffic had resumed by late morning.
This incident underscores the ongoing issue of impaired driving and its devastating consequences on road safety.
