GM of El Cajon business targeted in immigration raid sentenced to probation
John Washburn, general manager of San Diego Powder & Protective Coatings, pleaded guilty to federal immigration-related charges and was sentenced to one year of probation and 50 hours of community service. Federal agents raided the El Cajon business in March, detaining numerous individuals, including undocumented workers who lived in the warehouse. An undercover agent from Homeland Security Investigations secured employment at the company using a fraudulent Permanent Resident card and Social Security number. Washburn acknowledged knowing that at least ten employees were undocumented and had communicated this with other managers, leading to careful assignment of workers to military bases. This case underscores the challenges businesses face regarding immigration regulations and compliance.
The company, which specializes in coatings for military and government vessels, is under scrutiny for its employment practices. The investigation reflects broader issues surrounding undocumented labor in industries tied to national security. Local authorities may increase oversight as a result of this case.
