Reader view Longer-term planning needed to address Edmonds budget deficit
The Edmonds City Council faces a budget deficit and must decide whether to maintain its quiet, residential character or pursue economic growth through commercial development. At a recent meeting, Keep Edmonds Vibrant (KEV) presented its views on addressing this financial challenge. Don Randall, a long-time resident, emphasized the importance of long-term planning to create a vibrant community that attracts diverse businesses and amenities. He outlined two scenarios: one that keeps Edmonds a peaceful beach town reliant on property taxes and another that embraces growth, providing more shops and recreational spaces. Randall believes that many residents would prefer the latter approach, as it could lower housing costs and enhance community life.
He highlighted that the current budget crisis stems from past councils' failure to engage in long-term planning. The city can close its budget gap with short-term measures, but a sustainable strategy is essential for future stability. Randall urges the council to think bigger and involve the community in shaping Edmonds' future.
