South County Fire Commissioners adopt 2026 budget

Edmonds, WALocal News

South County Fire’s Board of Commissioners approved a balanced budget of over $130 million for the year 2026, reallocating funding from property taxes to a benefit charge based on building size and risk. This approach aims to ensure a more equitable funding mechanism for emergency services. The budget includes provisions for 30 new firefighter positions and six administrative staff to enhance operational capacity. Homeowners will experience a monthly increase of just over $7, with the property tax levy rate set at $1. 15 per $1,000 of assessed value, slightly lower than the previous year.

The benefit charge for a 2,000-square-foot home will increase from approximately $70. 39 to $106. 92 annually, a modest rise of less than $37. To maintain fiscal responsibility amid economic uncertainties, the board will require additional approval for most new hires. This budget reflects a proactive approach to funding emergency services while addressing community needs.

The decision underscores the board's commitment to enhancing public safety and operational efficiency.
