Snohomish County The federal shutdowns impact on SNAP and WIC recipients

Edmonds, WALocal News

The ongoing federal shutdown threatens food assistance for thousands in Snohomish County, with local programs like SNAP and WIC at risk of disruption starting Nov. 1. About 28,348 households, or over 77,000 people, rely on SNAP benefits for basic needs, according to Census data. County Executive Dave Somers called for public support for local food banks, which are essential in times of crisis. Washington state officials announced $2.

2 million in weekly aid to food banks, but challenges persist due to previous cuts and rising demand. The Department of Social and Health Services indicated that SNAP benefits may halt if federal action is not taken by Oct. 31. Meanwhile, WIC benefits are available only through mid-November, contingent on federal decisions. Community members can assist by donating funds, volunteering, or raising awareness about the issue.

Local food banks and nonprofits serve as critical lifelines for those facing food insecurity during this crisis.
