Cedar Way Elementary School parent sues after son loses fingertip in classroom incident
A Cedar Way Elementary School parent has filed a lawsuit against the Edmonds School District, alleging negligence after her son lost a fingertip due to a classroom incident. The suit claims that during an April 2023 incident, the special education teacher, Mary Evarone, dismissed the child when he asked for a break, leading to a heavy door severing his finger. The parents allege that school officials, including Principal Chris Lindblom, failed to communicate details of the incident despite multiple requests. The child, who has ADHD and Oppositional Defiance Disorder, felt unsafe upon returning to the classroom and eventually transferred to Westgate Elementary in May 2023. Attorney Chris Davis, representing the family, stated that the trauma was worsened by the school's response.
The lawsuit names the teacher, principal, and district, while Evarone is no longer at Cedar Way Elementary. The case raises significant concerns regarding the safety and communication protocols in schools. The district's communications director declined to comment due to the pending litigation.
