Washington ponders increasing tolls on a major Seattle route during the World Cup

Edmonds, WALocal News

The Washington State Transportation Commission is weighing a temporary toll increase for the Highway 99 tunnel in Seattle during the FIFA World Cup next summer. With six matches scheduled at Lumen Field from June 1 to July 15, 2026, traffic is expected to surge significantly. Proposed increases of 50 cents to $1 per trip aim to cover additional costs for managing the influx of visitors and maintaining infrastructure. Approximately 750,000 people are expected to visit Washington state during this six-week period, with events also taking place at local universities. State lawmakers have earmarked around $24 million for World Cup-related expenses, including $14 million for transit improvements and $2 million for maintenance near the tunnel.

The commission will evaluate how many drivers might opt for local roads to avoid higher tolls. If approved, this would mark the first temporary toll increase for this route. Public input will be gathered during the rate-setting process if the commission decides to move forward.
