Edmonds School District reviews 452M proposed budget Steep cuts, state funding changes end deficit streak

Edmonds, WALocal News

The Edmonds School District reports a projected $2. 6 million surplus for the 2025-2026 budget, the first surplus since the 2020-21 school year. Revenues are estimated at $452. 4 million compared to $449. 7 million in expenses.

District Executive Director of Business and Finance Lydia Sellie emphasized that the surplus is minimal, covering less than two days of district operations. Legislative changes have played a crucial role, allowing full collection of a $74. 8 million voter-approved levy, which is expected to boost revenue by $6. 3 million. The board held a public hearing on the budget and will vote on it July 8.

Despite cutting over $10 million in expenses in the previous year, the district plans to restore some programs, including a $100,000 health curriculum. Rising inflation and increased labor costs remain significant challenges. Looking ahead, the district's four-year Educational Programs and Operations levy will expire in 2026, necessitating voter renewal for future stability.
