CU's storm chasers are studying hailstorms
The University of Colorado Boulder’s Eric Frew leads a team studying hailstorms as part of the ICECHIP project, which involves approximately 70 researchers. Their objective is to enhance understanding of hail formation and improve damage assessments using drones. Hail damages properties worth billions each year, significantly impacting insurance rates. Frew stresses the importance of this research for developing better forecasting models and resilient infrastructure. The team will spend six weeks mapping storm clouds on the Front Range and Great Plains.
They aim to gather data on the extent of hail damage immediately following storms. Interestingly, their drone design inspired the film "Twisters," showcasing its advanced capabilities. Unlike tornadoes, hail poses unique challenges due to its unpredictability and potential for extensive damage.
