NPR, Colorado Public Radio sue Trump administration over executive order to cut federal funding to public media

Denver, COLocal News

NPR and three Colorado public radio stations initiated a lawsuit against President Trump on May 28, 2025, in response to his executive order cutting federal funding for public media. The lawsuit claims the order violates free speech and retaliates against NPR's reporting, which Trump has labeled as biased. Filed in federal court in Washington, the suit emphasizes that the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which distributes federal funds, is intended to protect public media from political interference. NPR's CEO remarked that the order aims to manipulate the network's journalistic standards. In defense, the White House stated that Trump is acting within his authority to ensure taxpayer dollars are used efficiently.

PBS, while not part of the lawsuit, is exploring its options for legal action to protect its funding.
