Denver gets a new power over landlords

Denver, COLocal News

Denver City Council empowered the health department to enforce tenant relocation from uninhabitable rental units. This new authority aligns with Colorado's SB24-094, which requires landlords to ensure habitability. Previously, tenants needed to pursue court action for relocation assistance, but the new law allows the city to directly enforce compliance. If landlords neglect to provide assistance, the health department can impose liens on their properties. This change addresses the city's concerns about displacing residents while ensuring safety standards are met.

The council passed the measure unanimously, reflecting a commitment to tenant protections. Unsafe living conditions include issues like pest infestations, broken utilities, and structural hazards. The law aims to alleviate the burden on tenants facing noncompliant landlords.
