Denver moves to spend 75M for sidewalk overhaul

Denver, COLocal News

Denver's administration unveiled a $75 million plan for sidewalk improvements, targeting over 3,000 miles of city sidewalks. Mayor Mike Johnston's initiative aims to rectify longstanding issues like uneven surfaces and narrow paths to enhance walkability for future generations. Two contracts, one worth $25 million with Milender White Construction and another for $50 million with SEMA Construction, will be overseen by the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure (DOTI). Program director Geneva Hooten indicated that work could begin as soon as this year. The $75 million budget covers construction feasibility reviews, labor, and materials.

To fund the project, the city expects to raise $97. 5 million over three years by billing property owners, with most already paying $150 annually. Councilmember Darrell Watson emphasized the human impact of the improvements, noting benefits for residents like his mother. The full Denver City Council will consider the contracts in the coming weeks.
