By the numbers Who gets Medicaid insurance in Colorado

Denver, COLocal News

In Colorado, about 1. 22 million residents, or roughly 20% of the population, depend on Medicaid, with 39% being children and 6% aged 65 and older. Cuts proposed in President Trump's One Big Beautiful Bill Act threaten to impact an estimated 377,000 residents, particularly in rural areas where more than half of the population relies on Medicaid. Monitoring the new work requirements could impose an additional $57 million burden on the state annually. Medicaid also accounts for 44% of the state's births and provides Colorado hospitals with $3 billion, the largest share of payouts.

The program primarily supports individuals with disabilities, who represent 5% of enrollees but consume over 40% of expenditures. Democrats in the state legislature are under pressure to preserve the Health First Colorado program in light of these potential changes. The two congressional districts with the highest proportion of Medicaid recipients are represented by Republicans who voted for the reconciliation bill. This situation raises stakes for local lawmakers as they navigate the implications of these proposed cuts.
