Sky-high observation tower pitched for downtown Denver

Denver, COLocal News

A 673-foot observation tower is under consideration for downtown Denver, potentially becoming the city's fourth-tallest building. The structure, designed as a sculptural spire with a lattice wrap and an orb at the top, would be located at 1546 California St. , less than a block from 16th Street. Developer Ephraim LLC submitted plans this week, transitioning the current parking lot into a landmark. The project faces additional scrutiny from the city's Landmark Preservation office due to its location in a designated historic district.

If approved, the tower would exceed notable structures such as Dallas' Reunion Tower and Seattle's Space Needle. Barry Gilbert of NAI Shames Makovsky, the construction firm involved, declined to comment on the proposal. Past attempts to erect a skyscraper in the area were unsuccessful, highlighting the complexities of urban development in historic districts. This project could significantly alter Denver's skyline and attract tourism.
