Sister Rosemary Connelly, a pioneering leader of Misericordia Heart of Mercy, died on June 20, 2025, at 94 years old. Her compassionate stewardship over more than 50 years established the facility as a leading home for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in the U. S. Born in Chicago in 1931, she joined the Sisters of Mercy at age 18 and later earned degrees in Sociology and Social Work. Connelly began her work at Misericordia in 1969, where she recognized the urgent need for expanded resources for children with disabilities.

She spearheaded the facility’s relocation to a 31-acre campus in West Ridge, which now serves 600 residents and 200 families through outreach programs. Connelly was known for her ability to advocate fiercely for her residents, engaging with local politicians to secure necessary resources. Her interactions with figures like former Mayor Rahm Emanuel highlighted her unique approach, blending strength with kindness. The legacy of Sister Rosemary Connelly will continue to inspire those dedicated to improving the lives of individuals with disabilities.
