Open Books New Mobile Bookstore Is Rolling Out To West, South Sides
Open Books launched its mobile bookstore in June 2025 to enhance access to free literature in underserved neighborhoods of Chicago's South and West sides. The initiative kicked off on June 8 during a summer event along Douglas Boulevard. CEO Jennifer Steele emphasized that the “booksmobile” aims to make books accessible, reflecting the organization’s mission to transform lives through reading. Since its establishment in 2006, Open Books has distributed over 1. 3 million books to nearly 47,000 students, highlighting its commitment to literacy.
The mobile service will reach neighborhoods like McKinley Park and Back of the Yards, targeting areas with limited access to books. Patricia Gomez, who leads the mobile program, reported positive community responses at the initial events. With fewer than one in three CPS students reading at grade level, the mobile bookstore addresses significant literacy disparities in low-income areas. Open Books will continue prioritizing North Lawndale while expanding its reach to other communities.
