Andrew Sobotka has played a pivotal role in the growth of the Chicago Gay Hockey Association, expanding its membership from 20 to nearly 100 players since 2009. As a finalist for the NHL’s Willie O’Ree Community Hero Award, he emphasized the association's role in providing a supportive community for LGBTQ+ individuals. Although he did not win the top prize, Sobotka donated his $5,000 award to the organization, reinforcing its mission. The association collaborates with Hockey on Your Block to offer free hockey and ice skating classes to Chicago youth, demonstrating its commitment to social impact. Sobotka has served as president from 2010 to 2024, during which he quadrupled the team's size and led charitable initiatives.

The team also hosts events like the Market Days Classic tournament at the Blackhawks’ Fifth Third Arena. Sobotka's leadership has garnered attention and support, contributing to the visibility of LGBTQ+ representation in sports. His efforts reflect a broader trend of inclusivity in hockey, with many cities forming similar associations.
