Strong Storms Could Usher In Good, Old Fashioned Heat Wave For Chicago This Weekend

Chicago, ILLocal News

Chicago is bracing for an intense heat wave this weekend, with temperatures predicted to exceed 95 degrees from Saturday to Monday. Prior to the heat, severe thunderstorms are expected on Wednesday, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a flood watch for the region. The combination of high temperatures and humidity could result in a heat index of 100 degrees or more, creating hazardous conditions for residents. Friday marks the summer solstice, bringing the most daylight of the year with nearly 15 hours of sun. Historical data shows that only five times since 1871 have there been three consecutive days above 95 degrees in June, with the last occurrence in 1988.

Public libraries will serve as cooling centers, and the city plans to open additional community service centers if a heat warning is declared. Meteorologist Bill Snyder notes that this heat wave is a “good old-fashioned summer heat wave. ” Residents are advised to take precautions to stay cool and hydrated during this extreme weather.
