Puerto Rican Arts Alliance Community Center Project Gets City Council OK
The Puerto Rican Arts Alliance's expansion plan in Avondale received a green light from City Council, allowing the organization to create a new community center and offices. The $3 million project will transform two adjacent buildings to increase educational opportunities for local youth and artists. Founder Carlos Hernandez highlighted that the expansion is vital for accommodating their growing programs amid challenges like rising rents and gentrification. The proposal includes a redesigned courtyard, an addition to the vacant building, and restoration of the firehouse's brick facade to maintain its character. The arts alliance has a history of providing cultural support in the neighborhood and has previously navigated similar challenges during its time in Humboldt Park.
Ald. Anthony Quezada and local residents have shown strong support for the project, which now awaits a special-use permit. If granted, Hernandez anticipates the project will take eight months, with the new facilities set to open in late 2026. The organization plans to address artist residencies in future expansions as funding becomes available.
