April is National 9-1-1 Education Month and National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week is April 13-19

The City of Chicago's Office of Emergency Management and Communications (OEMC) is celebrating National 9-1-1 Education Month, recognizing the invaluable contributions of 9-1-1 call takers, dispatchers, and other emergency personnel. This observance aligns with National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week, taking place from April 13-19, and will culminate in an awards ceremony on April 17. Frank Velez, the OEMC Acting Executive Director, expressed pride in the dedication of OEMC employees, who work tirelessly to ensure public safety. Throughout April, OEMC will highlight the essential role its staff plays in responding to emergencies and providing critical support to first responders. The organization encourages citizens to remain aware of their surroundings and report suspicious activity, promoting the national campaign, "If You See Something, Say Something™.

" To facilitate effective communication with 9-1-1, OEMC shares vital tips centered around the five Ws: what is happening, where it is happening, who is involved, when it occurred, and whether weapons are present. This initiative not only honors the hard work of emergency personnel but also fosters community engagement and awareness of public safety measures. By educating the public on responsible 9-1-1 usage, OEMC aims to empower Chicagoans to contribute to their own safety and that of their neighbors.
