City Seeks Redevelopment Proposals for More Than 400 Vacant Properties

Chicago, ILLocal News

On April 1, the City of Chicago will offer over 400 parcels of vacant land for redevelopment, with a strong emphasis on affordable housing projects. Among the highlighted properties are 54 lots intended for Missing Middle housing on the Far South Side and a CTA site in Lake View aimed at mixed-income housing. Mayor Brandon Johnson underscored the potential for these sites, collectively valued at $26 million, to attract significant private investment. Developers can benefit from financial incentives, including assistance of up to $150,000 per unit and the sale of lots for just $1. Applications for these opportunities are due by May 15 and June 30, depending on the property.

The initiative is part of a concerted effort to reduce bureaucratic hurdles while enhancing public and private sector collaboration. This redevelopment effort aligns with Fair Housing Month, reinforcing the city's commitment to affordable housing. As DPD Commissioner Ciere Boatright noted, returning these properties to productive use is crucial for community development.
