Mayor Brandon Johnson and Department of Transportation Release Chicagos First Comprehensive EV Framework Plan

Chicago, ILLocal News

The Chicago Moves Electric Framework Plan, launched by Mayor Brandon Johnson and the Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT), aims to significantly improve electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure while reducing transportation-related emissions across the city. This comprehensive plan emphasizes equity, ensuring that historically underserved neighborhoods will have better access to low-carbon transportation options. Key goals include enhancing multi-modal integration with public transit and addressing critical gaps where market forces fail to provide adequate service. Currently, Chicago boasts over 860 public EV charging locations, yet many areas, particularly on the South and West Sides, face limited access. As the electric transportation market rapidly expands, the city aims to meet ambitious climate targets, such as full electrification of its fleet by 2035.

Mayor Johnson highlighted the importance of public input, inviting residents to share their thoughts on the draft framework until May 18, 2025. CDOT Commissioner Tom Carney emphasized that this initiative reflects community voices and partnerships, creating a roadmap for sustainable transportation. The framework serves as a critical step towards cleaner air and improved quality of life for all Chicagoans.
