Vietnam veterans gather for memorial on city's riverfront 'It should never happen again'
On National Vietnam War Veterans Day, a poignant gathering took place at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial on Chicago’s Riverwalk, bringing together 60 veterans and supporters to honor their shared history. Barron Buchunas, a 75-year-old veteran, became emotional while listening to the ceremonial notes of taps, symbolizing remembrance. Fellow veteran Charles Padilla shared the significance of their weekly meetings, emphasizing the mental health benefits of camaraderie among veterans. The event's theme, “Chicago Remembers,” served as a reminder that many veterans continue to battle PTSD and health issues stemming from Agent Orange exposure. Buchunas voiced strong concerns over recent budget cuts to Veterans Affairs, stating that such actions betray the promise to support veterans.
Organizer Carlos Saladino wished his peers well, hoping to see them again next year. Former sergeant John Andres echoed the need for lessons learned from the war, advocating for a future without such conflicts. The gathering not only honored the past but also urged current leaders to prioritize veteran care and avoid repeating historical mistakes.
