Chicago Department of Public Health Notified by The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services of the Immediate Termination of Covid-Related Grants

Chicago, ILLocal News

The Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) has received notice that $125 million in COVID-related grants from the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services will be terminated on March 24, 2025. This abrupt funding cut will impact 22 contracts and over 100 staff positions, posing a significant threat to public health initiatives. Mayor Brandon Johnson voiced his concerns, labeling the decision as an attack on essential funding for vulnerable communities.

He emphasized that investment in public health is crucial to prevent future outbreaks, learning from the lessons of the COVID-19 pandemic. The grants were initially established under the CARES Act to bolster public health agencies' capacities nationwide. With the cessation of these funds, CDPH will face challenges in monitoring infectious diseases and providing immunization services. The potential fallout includes fewer vaccination clinics and diminished resources for rapid response in schools and healthcare facilities. As CDPH collaborates with other agencies to assess the full impact, the future of public health preparedness in Chicago hangs in the balance.
