Chicago Launches First Co-Governance Framework in Partnership with Chicago United For Equity

Chicago, ILLocal News

Chicago has formally introduced its first Co-Governance Framework, a significant initiative spearheaded by Mayor Brandon Johnson's administration in partnership with the Office of Equity and Racial Justice (OERJ) and Chicago United for Equity (CUE). More than 200 community members from 57 neighborhoods contributed to this framework through 18 community conversations, where their insights on governance and decision-making were documented. Mayor Johnson emphasized the importance of this framework in shifting the local government's approach to prioritize community voices in shaping policies. The framework aims to tackle racial, health, and economic inequities, fostering a collaborative environment where government and community members work as partners. Public participation remains a key aspect, with feedback being accepted until February 28, 2025, to enhance the framework's effectiveness.

Candace Williams, Interim Executive Director of CUE, reiterated the commitment to shared power in democratic processes. The Co-Governance Steering Committee, consisting of diverse individuals, played a crucial role in facilitating these conversations. A convening is scheduled for early April to present the final framework and discuss future initiatives.
