Land Acquisition Would Support Future Development Near Englewood Trail

Chicago, ILLocal News

The City of Chicago is advancing a plan to acquire 0. 7 acres of mostly vacant land located near Throop and 59th streets, aimed at facilitating mixed-use development in the Englewood area. Mayor Brandon Johnson introduced the proposal to the City Council, emphasizing the importance of community involvement in the development process. The land, which includes six vacant lots and a one-story commercial building, will be combined with adjacent City property to form a five-acre site intended for future projects. This initiative is in line with the "Englewood Agro-Eco District Land Use Plan," adopted by the Plan Commission in August 2024, which seeks to enhance food-related investments along the Englewood Nature Trail.

The acquisition costs for the land are still being assessed, as the properties are owned by the Cook County Land Bank and private owners. In preparation for this development, environmental remediation work is currently being conducted on the adjacent City properties. This strategic move reflects a commitment to revitalizing the Englewood neighborhood and addressing local needs through sustainable development. Such projects not only aim to boost the local economy but also enhance community engagement and environmental sustainability.
