Mayor Brandon Johnson, Federal Transit Administration and the Chicago Transit Authority Announce Finalization of the 1.9 Billion Funding for Transformational Red Line Extension Project

Chicago, ILLocal News

Mayor Brandon Johnson recently announced the completion of a $1. 9 billion funding agreement for the Red Line Extension Project, a pivotal development for Chicago's South Side. This project will extend the Red Line by 5. 5 miles, connecting 95th Street to 130th Street and adding four new stations designed to improve access for residents. The project aims to rectify decades of transportation inequity, providing vital access to jobs, education, and healthcare for low-income communities.

The funding agreement, signed with the Federal Transit Administration, represents the largest transit infrastructure grant awarded to the Chicago Transit Authority in its history. Expected to break ground in early 2026 and complete by 2030, the initiative is projected to create over 12,000 construction jobs and nearly 60,000 indirect job opportunities. U. S. Senator Dick Durbin emphasized the project's importance, stating it addresses long-standing transit inequities and will bolster the local economy.

Furthermore, the Red Line Extension is part of a broader effort to stimulate economic development and enhance the quality of life for Far South Side residents. This transformative project reflects a commitment to equitable transportation solutions and community investment.
