TIF Support Proposed for Timeline Theater Project in Uptown

Chicago, ILLocal News

In a move to revitalize the Uptown neighborhood, Mayor Brandon Johnson has proposed up to $14 million in Tax Increment Financing (TIF) to support the Timeline Theater's ambitious $40 million performance venue project. The new venue will be constructed in the historic W. C. Reebie & Brother warehouse at 5035 N. Broadway, transforming the space into a vibrant cultural hub.

This four-story development will not only house a 250-seat theater but will also include rehearsal, office, hospitality, and community spaces. The financial assistance will be structured as a $10 million forgivable loan along with a $4 million repayable loan, sourced from the Lawrence/Broadway TIF district. The project is expected to create 200 construction jobs, while retaining 12 permanent full-time and 14 part-time jobs once operational. Furthermore, Timeline Theater, which has been a staple of the local arts scene for 25 years, plans to enhance its educational programs in collaboration with Chicago Public Schools. With initial performances slated for early 2026, this development is poised to significantly impact the local economy and cultural landscape.

The proposal underscores the city's commitment to fostering arts and community development in Chicago.
