TIF Support Proposed for Restoration of Uptown Music Venue

Chicago, ILLocal News

The City of Chicago has announced a significant proposal to restore the historic Wilson Theater in Uptown, with $5 million in Tax Increment Financing (TIF) suggested by Mayor Brandon Johnson. This initiative is part of a larger $11. 5 million project aimed at transforming the venue into a live performance space capable of accommodating 700 attendees. The Double Door Liquors 2. 5 LLC will lead this effort, which also includes the creation of a tuition-free after-school music program designed to engage local youth in collaboration with Uplift High School, The People’s Music School, and Black Ensemble Theatre.

The Wilson Theater, which has been a part of the community since its construction in 1909, is located at 1050 W. Wilson Ave and is recognized as part of the Uptown Square Landmark District. Earlier this year, the restoration project was awarded a $125,000 Adopt-A-Landmark grant to help cover eligible costs. This TIF proposal is a part of the Department of Planning and Development’s broader Community Development Grant program, emphasizing the city’s commitment to fostering cultural growth and sustainability. The project not only promises to revive a historic venue but also aims to enrich the local arts scene and provide educational opportunities for students.

With the potential reopening of the Wilson Theater, the city hopes to enhance community engagement and support the creative economy in Uptown.
