'Circular Economy' Headquarters Buildout to Receive City Grant

In a significant move to promote sustainability, the City of Chicago has allocated an $825,000 grant from the Neighborhood Opportunity Fund to Plant Chicago, a nonprofit focused on circular economy initiatives. The funding will support the renovation of a former firehouse located at 4459 S. Marshfield Ave. , transforming it into a mixed-use headquarters. The total cost of the project is estimated at $1.

8 million, with the grant covering eligible buildout and worker training expenses. The renovated space will provide facilities for sustainable indoor gardening, workspaces, and retail operations, aligning with Plant Chicago's mission to maximize the benefits of interconnected uses. This investment is part of the city’s broader strategy to enhance neighborhood investment, particularly in the South, Southwest, and West sides of Chicago. The Neighborhood Opportunity Fund channels fees from downtown construction projects towards initiatives that foster local development. Plant Chicago has been operational for 13 years, working on various projects that emphasize sustainability and community engagement.

This renovation is poised to create new opportunities for local employment and environmental stewardship.
