Chicago, ILLocal News

The Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) will host the "Safe Spaces" conference on September 24, 2024, aimed at fostering a lead-free and healthy home environment. This event will feature discussions on critical topics such as lead paint hazards, asthma control, and pharmacological treatments for children suffering from lead poisoning. With significant strides made to reduce lead exposure in Chicago—decreasing from one in four children in the 1990s to less than one in 100 today—CDPH emphasizes its ongoing commitment to addressing lead hazards. The conference will also include a "City That Works" room, where city agencies like CDPH and the Department of Water Management will provide information on lead service line replacements and free water testing services. Additionally, CDPH, in partnership with local pharmacies, is offering free flu shots for seniors, encouraging them to attend vaccination events with their insurance cards.

The department plans to announce further vaccination opportunities for all Chicagoans aged six months and older in the coming weeks. Lastly, CDPH is expanding health services in the Pilsen neighborhood, enhancing access to critical health resources for community members.
