Illinois Congresswoman Says Tour Of Broadview ICE Facility Reinforced Her Concerns

Chicago, ILLocal News

U. S. Rep. Lauren Underwood confirmed her serious concerns about the Broadview ICE processing facility following a tour on Monday. She reported inadequate medical care, stating there is no on-site medical staff, forcing officers to call 911 for emergencies.

Underwood noted the facility provided minimal supplies, including just one package of Huggies and some sanitary pads. A federal judge issued a restraining order mandating significant improvements after hearing testimonies from detainees about overcrowding and poor conditions. The order requires cleaning of holding cells twice a day and adequate hygiene supplies for detainees. Underwood's visit aligns with similar concerns raised by the ACLU, particularly regarding detainee access to legal assistance. The Chicago immigration court docket is among the largest in the nation, with over 230,000 cases pending.

Underwood emphasized the unacceptable treatment of immigrants and U. S. citizens at the facility.
