Neighbors Fought To Save NW Side Green Space. Now, The Dunning Read Natural Area Is Growing
The Dunning Read Natural Area, once slated for a Home Depot, now thrives thanks to community activism led by Cecilia LaPorta. In 2002, LaPorta and her neighbors successfully opposed commercial development, preserving the 21-acre park at 4050 N. Oak Park Ave. Over the years, volunteers have worked tirelessly to restore the park, removing invasive species and planting native trees and shrubs. The Park District's takeover in 2022 has accelerated these efforts, including prescribed burns and infrastructure improvements.
The recent name change to Dunning Read Natural Area aims to raise awareness and attract new visitors. Volunteers regularly participate in cleanup and maintenance activities, fostering community involvement. Future plans include a nature play space and bike racks, enhancing the park's accessibility. LaPorta's vision for a safe green space for her children has blossomed into a community asset, promising enjoyment for generations to come.
